Chapter 5: Xiantai Alcohol

Aunt Zhang rushed her husband to stop playing and start eating, so Uncle Zhang quickly waved at the viewers before he went back to the dining table.
It was finally time for dinner. Su Yu poured glasses of Xiantai liquor for both Uncle Zhang and Aunt Zhang.
With a low alcohol percentage, the Xiantai liquor from Su Yu’s hometown was brewed using the same method as how their ancestors brewed grain wine.
Therefore, it was easy on the palate even for those who could barely consume alcohol. Those who were better at drinking could guzzle it like water.
“Wow! Dude, what are you drinking? Why is it green?”
“What brand is it? I’ve never tried something like that before.”
“Is it self-brewed? Grain wine has impurities in it, thus the green hue.”
“How’s the alcohol percentage?”
“Grain wine usually has a low alcohol percentage, similar to rice wine.”
“Have you read ‘Water Margin’? People used to drink grain wine like water in the ancient days.”
Su Yu then introduced the liquor to his viewers, “This liquor is called Xiantai, and it’s brewed here in my hometown. Almost every family in my village knows how to brew this. Uncle Zhang finished his own vat, so he got this from someone else.”
“Bro, are you selling it? I want to buy some to taste.”
“+1! Me too! My dad likes grain wine, but baijiu’s alcohol percentage is too high, and it’s tough on the throat. This green liquor looks like a suitable choice!”
“Please sell it, handsome! Why don’t you put it in your promoted shopping cart?”
Su Yu did not expect viewers to show interest in his hometown brew.
He explained, “I don’t think I can sell it at the moment because I don’t have that much stock now. If you guys really want a bottle though, I can go get it from others in the village, but since everyone has their own way of brewing, it will taste different. I cannot guarantee the same taste, so it won’t be ideal. If you guys can wait for a few days, I’ll be able to brew them myself.”
“That’s not a problem! As long as you have the stock, I’m happy to wait for two more days!”
“That’s right. We can wait! A day or two is fine.”
“That’s a promise then! I’ll come back in a few days to buy this liquor.”
Uncle Zhang and Aunt Zhang were surprised by what they heard.
“Lil’ Yu, can you also sell items on your stream?”
Su Yu nodded. “Of course, it’s normal for streamers to sell stuff on their streams. I guess the viewers are interested in our village’s Xiantai liquor, so I think I’ll brew some to sell.”
Uncle Zhang nodded. “Are you promoting our Xiantai liquor on the stream? That’s not bad at all!”
As a long-time drinker, h could never get used to other brands of liquor or alcohol. The only liquor he loved was the one his hometown brewed. When he was younger, he tried bringing the Xiantai liquor out of the village but failed.
Now, seeing how Su Yu sold Xiantai liquor through his stream, Uncle Zhang felt thrilled for him. He filled Su Yu’s glass with the liquor.
Su Yu picked a piece of meat with his chopsticks. Upon chewing it, he realized that it tasted rather different. It was spicy and numbed the tongue but was also tasty.
“Uncle Zhang, what meat is this?”
“This? This is braised rabbit meat. Didn’t you taste it when you were younger? Can’t you tell?”
Su Yu said, “Maybe it’s been a while since I had any. I forgot how rabbit meat tastes. Uncle Zhang, did you buy the rabbit?”
Uncle Zhang shook his head. “Buy? Why spend the money when I can hunt for it in the mountains? The mountains behind our village have almost everything. It’s just a few rabbits, easy-peasy. When I was younger, I even caught a wild boar.”
Shocked, Su Yu said, “You hunted the rabbits?”
“Yeah, I got four. We cooked two which you are eating. I plan to sell the other two tomorrow,” Uncle Zhang said.
“OMG! Uncle Zhang! It’s not easy to hunt a wild rabbit now, but you got four?! Awesome!”
“I followed my father to a hunting trip the other day, and we didn’t even get one after a whole day! Uncle Zhang is awesome!”
“I have a question. Isn’t it illegal to hunt wild animals?”
“Wild rabbits in mountains aren’t protected animals, so it’s not illegal. As long as you preserve the population, it will be fine.”
“I want to know how Uncle Zhang caught the rabbits. Did he use a trap?”
Su Yu read through the comments and answered, “Besides having a hunter’s license, Uncle Zhang is also qualified to possess a hunting gun.”
“Uncle Zhang, I remember you have a hunting gun with you, don’t you?”
Uncle Zhang nodded.
There were still hunters living in rural villages, and those like Uncle Zhang had the licence to possess hunting guns.
Uncle Zhang had one such gun in his house, but it was heavily modified to lower its lethality. Nevertheless, it was still suitable for hunting some rabbits or sparrows.
“I want to have a look at Uncle Zhang’s hunting gun!”
“+1! Me too!”
“Bro, show us how to use it!”
Su Yu politely rejected his viewers’ request, “I’d have to pass on that as I’m afraid that my stream might get banned by the moderators.”
Then, he said, “How about this? If everyone is interested, I’ll go to the mountains with the stream on. Maybe we can collect some vegetables or hunt some rabbits. Wat do you guys say?”
“Be careful, bro. Hunting wild animals is illegal!”
Su Yu answered, “It’s fine. I have had a hunter’s license since I was 20. As long as I pay attention to the population, it will be fine. Besides, things are a little special here in my hometown—the government actually allows hunting.”
“What? Dude, you have a hunter’s license since you were 20? Awesome! But just how special is your village? Why does the government allow your village to hunt animals?”
“Yeah, I have the same question. Back in my place, any kind of hunting would result in jail time.”
“Because my village is near the mountains, and there are always animal attacks or wild animals raiding farms. If the population of wild animals goes up, it will cause our village trouble. So, the local government gave us permission to hunt animals, just not on a big scale,” Su Yu replied.
“I see. Bro, you sure are lucky that you can taste all kinds of wild animals!”
“Yeah, I’m drooling and I’m jealous! I’m looking forward to your hunting trip tomorrow.”
“So am I!”
After dinner, Su Yu helped to clean the table and wash the plates. By the time he got back to his own house, it was already 5.30 p.m.
The sun set over the western horizon while its yellow glory tainted half the sky orangey-red. The fiery red silk cotton trees along the street were dancing along the wind.
Xiantai Village already had a great scenery, but now with the setting sun over it, it looked even more like a painting.
“This is beautiful! I envy you for staying in such a beautiful place, dude.”
“There’s no way we can see such beautiful sceneries in the city. Jealous, absolutely jealous!”
“I can look at the scenery the whole day. In fact, I can screenshot any frame and it will fit as a wallpaper.”
[Princess Piggy sent you a Super Rocket.]
“The scenery is beautiful! I love you, handsome streamer!”
“Awesome, man! You are really something else! It’s just a day and you’ve received that many gifts? There may not be many of us here, but there are a lot of rich folks among us.”
“Boss Jun, Promise, and now another hidden big boss? I’m sold!”
Su Yu said, “Thank you for your Super Rocket, Princess Piggy.”
He then opened the gate and headed to his yard. When he stepped in, to his shock, he saw an enormous face in front of him, staring into his eyes.
“Holy f*ck!”
“What the heck?!”
“What is that?! I’m shocked!”
Even the viewers in the stream were taken aback. Then, they realized it was the white snake that had appeared earlier.
“Huh? You are still here?” Su Yu asked.
The white snake hissed and nuzzled its head against Su Yu’s hand, seeming rather tame and obedient. It appeared as though the snake was saying, “I’m sorry. It’s so comfortable here, so I’m not leaving.”
