Piers’ old house.
When Abigail went upstairs, Brandon Piers, Elder Piers, the wet nurse, and even renowned pediatricians from home were present.
Pullan led Abigail in, and all eyes instantly focused on her.
Elder Piers had met Abigail the night before, but was not deeply impressed. He didn’t expect that his grandson would bring in this plump girl, even when Dr. Waston couldn’t help. His gaze was curiosity filled.
Abigail faced the elder’s gaze confidently and politely. After greeting him, she turned to Brandon Piers, “Brandon, may I hold the child?”
Before Brandon Piers could nod, Kelly quickly handed the still-crying child to Abigail, “Miss Green, the young master has been crying since waking up. His throat is inflamed, and he still hasn’t had much to eat.”
“Let me see.” Abigail ignored Brandon Piers’ scrutinizing gaze, took the child, and gently rocked him in her arms. Her movements were slow and her gaze tender, “Little baby, don’t cry, be a good boy, little baby…”
The little guy was still fussing at first, but soon stopped crying and began nudging Abigail’s chest, again and again.
A little embarrassed, Abigail looked up and explained, “He must be hungry.”
“I’ll go and feed him.” The wet nurse said, but she didn’t dare to take the baby.
From five o’clock until now, Kelly felt tired and pain on her back and waist. She was scared of the child, fearing the kid would cry once she held him.
Clearly, everyone had the same thoughts. Elder Piers waved his hand, “Judy, draw the milk out and let Miss Green feed it with a bottle.”
“Yes, sir.” Kelly quickly went inside.
“Dr. Waston, what’s going on?” Brandon Piers tried to see something from Abigail’s face, but found nothing. He turned his head and asked the old pediatrician next to him.
As a pediatric authority, Dr. Waston had seen many bizarre cases that couldn’t be explained by medical science. All he could say was, “The scent on Miss Green must have given a sense of security to the young master. Newborns lack a sense of security, but this usually happens to a child’s dependence on their mother. Cases like Miss Green’s are quite rare.”
Upon hearing this, Brandon Piers eyed the scene of the baby lying in Abigail’s arms without crying but continually nudging her chest.
Thinking about the unintentional scene he’d witnessed last night, he rubbed his nose with the back of his finger, “Grandfather, it’s getting late. You should have breakfast with Dr. Waston.”
The young master stopped crying, which put Elder Piers at ease. He led Dr. Waston out, and Brandon Piers followed.
Once everyone had left and the sound of the electric pump echoed intermittently form the inner room, Abigail quickly sat on the bedside holding the impatient baby. She lifted her upper garment and quickly cleaned herself. The impatient young master immediately latched on.
He must have been starving. As a tiny baby, the way he sucked with a chomping sound seemed as if he wanted to finish all the milk he had never tasted in his life.
Abigail’s heart ached as she rubbed the baby’s nose with her own, the baby glanced at her and resumed feeding.
As Brandon Piers opened the door and saw this scene, he froze. He spun around sharply, his ears reddening as the flush spread. His actions might not have been loud, but they were enough to startle Abigail.
Abigail had never expected Brandon Piers to come back, her face turning red as she quickly covered herself and explained, “I was just trying to trick him.”
The baby in her arms wasn’t full yet, and with Abigail’s movement, he began to cry whimpering only helped solidify Abigail’s explanation.
Brandon Piers stayed silent, luckily at this moment Kelly emerged from the inner room. She promptly handed a bottle to Abigail, “Miss Green, maybe try this.”
“Okay.” Abigail was uncertain but still brought the bottle to the baby’s mouth. At first, the baby wasn’t willing, but after Abigail gently cooed and dripped some milk onto his lips, he began to eat once he tasted it.
Kelly quietly sighed in relief, as did Abigail, who was genuinely worried that the baby might only feed on her breasts.
Thankfully, he could use the bottle, so there was no need to worry about him going hungry.
When Abigail looked up again, there was no one by the door.
Abigail’s cheeks finally reddened slightly. How much had Brandon seen? Did he believe her explanation?
