Chapter 209: Chapter 66. Gustarte (1)
The path to the Royal Observatory was rough and long, and many monsters awaited the humans. Even if the team consisted of the best awakened heroes, there was no way that they could completely avoid getting caught.
There were hundreds of thousands of monsters and angels, and each of them was an enemy to humans. The only difference between angels and monsters were how humans call them.
Angels employed specific fighting techniques that were only known to them. Such techniques made it extremely hard for humans to fight against them. For instance, the angels struck anyone in their path, even if they were not enemies. Angels were only a little better than monsters because they did not spontaneously hunt for humans.
In the battlefield full of monsters and angels, the members of the team, who were the best awakened heroes in this world, were barely hanging on.
The priest duo, Kim Youra and Kim Minji, showed excellent performances amid the chaos on the battlefield.
“Stitch up.”
“Recover.”
The duo shone the brightest. Other team members were astonished at how fast they could recover from attacks and put together arms and legs that were cut or severely injured. Even the most renowned awakened heroes with the abilities of a priest could not do such a thing. It looked like a miracle.
Whatever the duo said became real. When one commanded the wound to be stitched, it did right away. Then the other would order it to be recovered, and so was it.
Despite the quick treatments, there were no side effects.
In addition, the two did not seem to get tired. It was often said that in order to gain an ability, one would have to let go of one. Although the two sisters had amazing abilities, they did not seem to suffer any drawbacks.
“Are they really humans?”
Yoo Eunhye shook her head gently.
The team had come about halfway. They had already fought with monsters and even angels. Some were hurt, and some died. The injured ones recovered quickly, but Kim Youra and Kim Minji could not revive the dead.
Yoo Eunhye thought that it was rather fortunate that the two sisters could not bring back the dead. If they could, Yoo Eunhye would feel guilty. She would blame herself that she could have saved her fallen comrades and ordinary folks from dying had she met the sisters earlier.
Thanks to the duo, the team had come this far despite the casualties. They had reached halfway, and half of the team had died. At this rate, the entire team would be gone by the time they reached their destination.
‘Even if everyone dies, we must complete this mission. That’s why these sisters are so important,’ Yoo Eunhye thought.
She had seen many awakened heroes who had abilities to cure others. However, none of them were as good as Kim Youra and Kim Minji. In order to complete the mission and achieve her goal, Yoo Eunhye needed the sisters desperately.
No matter how many died along the way, if there was just one person to carry the weapon to the destination, the mission would be successful. Yoo Eunhye knew that there was no guarantee that she would be the last person to survive.
Then the awakened hero looked at Edward Windsor.
“Eunhye, are you nervous?”
The boy smiled.
Edward was a little boy when Yoo Eunhye first met him, but he had grown a lot since then.
Edward wanted Yoo Eunhye to be like his mother and girlfriend from time to time. Unfortunately, Yoo Eunhye could not do that.
The boy was young, and he was improving at a tremendous speed. If Yoo Eunhye was ‘one’ of the most powerful awakened heroes, Edward could become the ‘most powerful one’.
He was improving rapidly that he was now almost as strong as Yoo Eunhye.
Yoo Eunhye believed that if only one person could survive out of the entire team to finish this mission, it would have to be Edward. She thought that it was the best decision not only for the entire mankind but also for herself.
“What are you talking about? I’m not nervous at all. Let’s move faster. We might need to detour.”
“What do you mean detour?”
“I think there is a battle going on nearby. It would be better to go around, even if that takes longer.”
“Then detour it is.”
Shrugging his shoulders, Edward stabbed an ogre next to him with a sword. It was already dead, but the awakened hero wanted to double-check.
The leader of the team was Yoo Eunhye, and other members of the team must follow her order.
Not only was Edward too young to lead others, but he was also inexperienced.
However, the boy was growing rapidly, and he could take over the leadership in just a couple of years. Edward would even be able to become a leader of a guild like Kim Yongwoo someday.
When Yoo Eunhye thought about Edward’s bright future, she was relieved.
‘Not everyone’s going to make it anyway,’ she pondered.
Yoo Eunhye underwent training to improve her strength and skills and fought injustice, only because she felt that it was her responsibility as one of the most powerful awakened heroes. She believed that the strong must protect the weak and fight for justice. Otherwise, the world would be filled with those who were evil, and it would come to an end.
Yoo Eunhye’s strong sense of responsibility led her to stay righteous, but it also made her radical from time to time. This responsibility pushed her to go against the children of the savior for some time.
The awakened hero volunteered for this mission for the same reason. She believed that without her, this mission, which would decide the fate of mankind, would not succeed. As a powerful awakened hero, she felt the need to protect those who were suffering from demons’ attacks and, more importantly, to contribute to saving the world. She had wanted to become a sage king before. When she saw that Edward was growing very quickly and that he would make a good leader, Yoo Eunhye did not wish to be a king anymore.
As fights continued and the team came closer to their destination, Yoo Eunhye started to believe that only a handful of team members would survive, and the rest would all die. Her assumptions hardly went wrong.
“If something happens to me, if I die, you must lead them, Edward.”
“Don’t say that.”
Edward scowled. Although Edward had spent much time in the training room, he was still a boy.
“Promise me.”
Yoo Eunhye was serious. She was determined to die for Edward, if need be.
The boy’s bright future was not the sole cause of her determination.
Yoo Eunhye had never had any children, but she saw Edward as her child, sometimes her little brother.
When Yoo Eunhye insisted that Edward swear to her, he turned around quickly.
“I promise you…,” Edward conceded. “But that will never happen.”
“Fine. Let’s get moving.”
“Unit Leader, we might not be able to move right away.”
Kim Youra, who just finished curing one of the team members, came to Yoo Eunhye.
“What do you mean we cannot proceed?”
“Monsters and angels are coming at us very quickly. Rei, my spirit, felt them approaching, and she is sure of it.”
So far, many awakened heroes had made contracts with spirits, but none of them were as large as the spirits that the sisters had. Not only were they large in size, but they were also very powerful. In fact, the spirits were even better than some awakened heroes.
“How far are they?”
If someone else claimed that they sensed the enemies before Yoo Eunhye did, the awakened hero would have doubted that person. However, Kim Youra had correctly detected the presence of enemies before Yoo Eunhye did for several times already, and the awakened hero did not have any doubt about the priest’s ability.
“We should—wait. Rei, what did you say?”
Kim Youra’s face turned serious. The Spirit of Fire said something to Kim Youra, and it seemed like grave news.
Kim Youra immediately informed Yoo Eunhye about what Rei told her.
“Run. Now,” Kim Youra urged Yoo Eunhye.
“Is the enemy too strong?”
“We don’t have time for this. We have no hope against it!”
The priest sensed the urgency that she did not have time to tell Yoo Eunhye in detail about what was coming.
The awakened hero had to decide quickly.
There was no time to contemplate things. If she opted to retreat and come back, it would be harder to complete this mission.
Although it was a hard decision to make, Yoo Eunhye made up her mind in an instant.
“Retreat!”
“It’s too late!” Kim Youra exclaimed. “Run as fast as you can!”
When Yoo Eunhye was about to command the others, something happened.
Boom!
The ground started to shake. Then a sphere appeared in the sky, which looked like a dark sun. The sphere then started to suck everything around it quickly like a black hole.
“I will show you the power of a true king, you harpies.”
A voice boomed from a distance.
Then a large creature appeared from far away. Following its course, the black sun started moving. Soon, darkness covered the sky.
It seemed that the creature was referring to the angels in the sky as harpies. Unfortunately, they were helpless against the black sun and the creature. The harpies screamed, and their wings ripped. Some were able to escape from the black hole, but they could not go far and then died.
Countless monsters rallied behind the creature. Together, they seemed indestructible.
Out of all the monsters, those with black wings looked the most striking. They had the heads of Cerberus and walked with two legs. The monsters looked like angels from legends.
However, none of the monsters were as powerful as their leader. The leader was one of the archdukes of demons, and his eyes were filled with fury and madness.
He had killed the largest number of humans out of all demons. As a result, humans were extremely hostile towards this archduke.
The demon was the most destructive and unpredictable of all. People used to compare him to a nuclear bomb. If any of the demons wanted to destroy Earth so bad, it would be this archduke. A small number of people who had access to the intelligence of this archduke were alerted to the demon’s whereabouts and plans.
And the archduke was now in front of them, slaying angels.
Soon, dozens of black spheres soared from areas near him, and they created an overwhelming black storm. The storm twisted the space, and it destroyed the boundaries between the earth and the sky.
It was not an ordinary storm, but a weapon of Archduke Ufa.
When Ufa grabbed the lower part of the black storm, it started to shake. It seemed to follow the archduke’s hand’s lead. Then the mad demon started using the storm like a sword. The angels immediately vanished as soon as it hit them.
“This demon is far beyond the limits of humans.”
Discouraged, Yoo Eunhye talked to Kim Youra. Although the awakened hero and her teammates were safe, she felt helpless at the tremendous power of the archduke. They were lucky enough to be far away from the archduke, hiding behind the debris. However, as the archduke moved around, he would eventually find them out. Yoo Eunhye thought about moving from their current location, but it would be extremely hard to get away without getting caught.
The archduke was busy attacking the angels at the moment. However, when all of the angels were gone, the archduke would discover Yoo Eunhye and her team, and he would launch attacks on them.
“The demon is an archduke, and his tremendous power is why archdukes are called the kings of demons.”
