Chapter 549: 548 suddenly died
Wen Ran, standing beside Mo Xiuchen, watched as his brows suddenly furrowed. Her eyebrows, too, reflect a layer of confusion as she wondered what had happened.
She didn’t ask, nor did she ask Mo Xiuchen to put it on speaker. She just quietly watched him.
After Mo Xiuchen said, “I’m going there now,” he hung up the phone. Without waiting for her to ask, he told her, “Ranran, Wu Tianyi suddenly dropped dead. I need to go to the police station now, would you like to come with me?”
Wen Ran’s eyes widened in shock as she processed his words. After a beat, she finally asked, “How could Wu Tianyi suddenly die? Is my dad at the police station now?”
Mo Xiuchen’s deep gaze held a hint of darkness, his voice solemn as he replied, “I’m not sure what caused it just yet. Your father is at the police station.”
The specifics of the situation were even unclear to Mo Xiuchen.
Gu Yan had only told him that Wu Tianyi had died less than two minutes after taking the medication he had brought him.
He was worried there might be something fishy about the situation, and more concerned that Wu Tianyi’s death might implicate Gu Yan and Lu Zhiyan, so he had to rush over immediately.
Upon hearing his words, Wen Ran’s beautiful face revealed a hint of worry. Without a second thought, she stated, “I will go with you.”
“Okay.”
Mo Xiuchen didn’t reject her. Partly because he didn’t want her out of his sight, and partly because he knew she was worried about her father.
Just after getting in the car, Wen Ran’s phone rang. It was a call from Wen Jin. Seeing her about to answer the call, Mo Xiuchen leaned over to fasten her seatbelt.
“Ranran, I just got a call saying Wu Tianyi is dead. Do you know about it?”
Wen Jin’s voice came over the phone. Wen Ran glanced at Mo Xiuchen seated beside her, gesturing for him to start driving, and answered calmly, “We’re on our way to the police station now.”
“All right, I’ll see you there.”
Wen Jin didn’t say much more after learning that she already knew about it.
“What did Wen Jin say?”
After she hung up, Mo Xiuchen asked with a look of concern. His large, well-defined hand controlled the steering wheel steadily, glancing at Wen Ran before refocusing his attention on the road ahead.
Wen Ran pursed her lips, her voice echoing softly in the car, “My brother also received the call and is on his way to the police station. He asked if I knew.”
With a grunt of acknowledgment, Mo Xiuchen said nothing more.
Wen Ran didn’t speak either, lost in her own thoughts instead.
The Aston glided smoothly through the evening shrouded in a sunset glow. The silence within the vehicle was unusually peaceful.
Mo Xiuchen occasionally glanced at the woman beside him through the rearview mirror. Seeing her slightly furrowed brows and curtained eyes, he wondered what was on her mind. Finally, he broke the silence, “Ranran, what are you thinking about?”
Caught off guard by his question, Wen Ran blinked in confusion. She wasn’t sure what she had been thinking about. Meeting Mo Xiuchen’s deep, lake-like eyes, she forced a small smile, “Nothing.”
By the time they arrived, Wen Jin had also just gotten there.
“Ranran, Xiuchen!”
Wen Jin came over to greet Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran.
Someone guided them to an office where Lu Zhiyan and Gu Yan were present. The atmosphere inside the office was tense, with several uniformed individuals present in addition to Lu Zhiyan and Gu Yan.
As Mo Xiuchen, Wen Jin, and Wen Ran entered, two individuals stood up, politely greeting them, their expressions serious.
The rest of the room followed suit and rose to their feet.
Wen Jin’s gaze met Lu Zhiyan’s. The latter had a cold, sharp look in his eyes, which softened slightly as they made eye contact.
After exchanging a few polite words with them, Mo Xiuchen calmly said, “We received a phone call saying that Wu Tianyi suddenly died during an interrogation, so we rushed over to check.”
The other party glanced at Lu Zhiyan before responding, “Indeed. If you have any questions regarding this matter, you should ask Officer Lu. He was the one interrogating Wu Tianyi. Director Gu was present at the time as well.”
Mo Xiuchen’s expression subtly changed as he said with slight puzzlement, “Really? How did Wu Tianyi suddenly die? Have you found the cause of death yet?”
“Mr. Mo, we are also looking into the cause of Wu Tianyi’s death. We’re waiting for the results.”
The Deputy Director next to him continued the conversation. But his gaze coldly glanced at Lu Zhiyan and swept over Gu Yan next to him, seemingly suggesting that Wu Tianyi’s death was somehow related to them.
“Director Gu, you may leave now. We’ll let you know as soon as we have results.”
Lu Zhiyan suddenly spoke, directing his words at Gu Yan.
“Director Gu cannot leave at this moment. Until the cause of Wu Tianyi’s death is determined, Director Gu needs to stay here. Some people saw him giving Wu Tianyi medicine just now.”
The Deputy Director from earlier interjected before anyone else could speak. However, before another word could be spoken, Mo Xiuchen beat them to it. His voice was laced with a hint of cold hardness and mockery, “Deputy Director Qin, are you implying that my father poisoned Wu Tianyi with his medicine?”
“It’s not me suspecting. Wu Tianyi only died after taking the medicine… ”
Despite the sharp look in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes, Deputy Director Qin’s expression remained unchanged.
“We’ve already contacted our lawyer on the way here. I believe he should be arriving soon. If you need to cooperate with the investigation, please discuss it with our lawyer,”
His voice faltered, and a hint of mockery appeared at the corner of his mouth, “Until there’s enough evidence to prove that my father caused Wu Tianyi’s death, he wouldn’t possibly stay here.”
Seeing the tension building, not only was Mo Xiuchen growing hostile, but Wen Jin also furrowed his brows, and Lu Zhiyan seemed slightly annoyed. The director quickly attempted to defuse the situation, “Mr. Mo, please don’t be angry. We’re not denying Director Gu his right to return home. We only wish to find out the cause of Wu Tianyi’s death as soon as possible.”
…
After they left, Gu Yan got into Mo Xiuchen’s car.
Wen Ran accompanied him in the back seat. Gu Yan recounted what had happened, “Wu Tianyi showed no signs of discomfort before taking the medicine I gave him. Yet, less than two minutes after taking it, he foamed at the mouth.”
“Dad, did someone give Wu Tianyi another drug before taking the medicine you gave him?”
Wen Ran furrowed her brows, her gaze fixed on Gu Yan intently.
In the driver’s seat, Mo Xiuchen sunk into deep thought without saying a word…
Gu Yan frowned and said in a deep voice, “No. When I arrived, Lu Zhiyan and his team had been back for just over ten minutes, and someone had been watching.”
“Dad, don’t worry. Lu Zhiyan’s already taken charge. There must have been some foul play involved in Wu Tianyi’s death, and Lu Zhiyan will certainly uncover it.”
Mo Xiuchen soothingly reassured him. Taking a deep breath, Gu Yan sighed heavily, “It’s not that I’m worried. It’s a waste that Wu Tianyi died. He must have known a lot about Fu Jingyi. That’s why they hurriedly killed him.”
He was just frustrated. It was hard to find someone who knew about Fu Jingyi’s whereabouts, and now, that person was dead.
