Chapter 49: How Inconvenient!
Because this happy news had come so suddenly and seemed too good to be true, to be doubly sure, Song Wenxin dialed Jiang Beihan’s number anyway to confirm the news.
The call was accepted, and, in his consistent and unchanging curt tone, he asked, “What is it?”
However, Song Wenxin did not seem to mind, asking happily instead, “Is it true that you are taking me to the launch this afternoon?”
“Are you saying that you do not want to go?” the response, in a killjoy tone, came through the phone.
“O-Of course I want to go. I will wait for you at the back gate of the campus, is that okay with you?” Song Wenxin replied instantly.
The campus was usually packed with people at this time, but the back gate would be quieter, making it a preferable location for her to meet up with Jiang Beihan.
Since her current relationship with Jiang Beihan was a little complicated, she did not want anyone to witness him picking her up from school, as it would definitely stir up a lot more trouble. So, for now, Boss Jiang would have to put up with this clandestine arrangement and pick her up at the back gate.
…
On the other hand, when Jiang Beihan, seated in the car rushing toward Song Wenxin’s campus, heard her tell him to go to the back gate, his face suddenly darkened.
Did she feel embarrassed by him? Was there a need for this cloak and dagger stuff?
“Is anything wrong?” Song Wenxin asked through the phone since he had not responded.
“How inconvenient! Okay, I get it!” he said with disdain before hanging up.
Having finished his call with Song Wenxin, Jiang Beihan dialed another number.
“I will be attending this afternoon’s new product launch personally,” he instructed emotionlessly through the phone.
“Will you be here in person, sir?” Jiang Beihan’s assistant queried, very surprised.
He hoped that he had not heard wrongly. The boss was actually going to attend the launch in person?! But that was an Earth-shattering first!
Jiang Beihan pursed his lips and then said, “Yes, please get it organized. I don’t want to be hounded by the press.”
Since they had invited a number of people from the press to the launch event, he did not want to be pestered by the reporters, having to field questions that he did not wish to respond to.
“Yes, sir. I will get onto it right away!” his assistant replied immediately.
…
At her end, after her phone conversation with Jiang Beihan, Song Wenxin ran to the campus’ back gate to wait for Jiang Beihan to appear.
She looked at the clothes that she was wearing. Since she was going to attend classes, she had decided not to wear the outfit that the help had laid out for her, choosing instead to wear her own clothes that she had brought with her.
Her outfit today comprised a pair of regular jeans, a jumper, and a long jacket.
She wondered if her attire was appropriate for a launch event.
Just as Song Wenxin was agonizing over his, a black Maserati MPV pulled up to the back gate of A-University and stopped without making a sound.
Song Wenxin was surprised. Since this was not the same car that she had ridden in with Jiang Beihan the day before yesterday, she almost missed it.
Until the window was wound down slowly, revealing Jiang Beihan’s extremely good-looking face.
“Get in,” Jiang Beihan said, looking with disdain at the slightly dilapidated state of the campus’ back gate before glancing at Song Wenxin.
“Oh…” Song Wenxin smiled and walked over quickly.
At the same time, an unfamiliar driver alighted and opened the car door for her.
Song Wenxin paused, a little surprised. The person driving Jiang Beihan around today was actually not Shangguan?
“Miss Song, please get in,” the driver said.
Nodding, Song Wenxin got into the car and sat beside Jiang Beihan.
After Song Wenxin had settled in the car, it began moving again at a steady pace.
…
Song Wenxin looked at the driver in front and turned to Jiang Beihan—who was seated beside her—asking in a puzzled tone, “Where’s Shangguan? Why is he not here?”
“Do you miss seeing him?”
