The kids were taken aback at first, but when they realized that Lu Xingguang’s threats were empty, they began to taunt him again at the top of their voices.
“Pitiful kid that no one loves. Gonna grow up and marry an old woman. Pitiful kid that no one loves. With a stepmom that’s ugly and mean…”
“Don’t you dare say my Honey is ugly and mean!” Having suppressed his anger for so long, when they started to badmouth Yan Susu, Lu Xingguang finally could not hold back any longer. Soon, they were all caught up in a fistfight.
“Teacher, Lu Xingguang is beating people up again!”
…
The school office.
“Lu Xingguang, why did you get into another fight? This time, I must summon your father here.”
“They started it. They said bad things about my Honey.”
“Lu Xingguang started the fight.”
The kids made quite a ruckus, pointing fingers at one another, each having their own opinion, all of which gave the teacher a tension headache.
Lu Xingguang was notorious for being a little bully, a prankster, always fighting and playing hooky, and generally involved in anything unruly. Every teacher in the school was at their wits’ end as to how they should manage him.
On top of it all, the Lu family was filthy rich, and they were major contributors to the school. The teachers had to tiptoe around this little cash cow and make sure that they didn’t upset him unless absolutely necessary.
However, they had received complaints from many parents, and the school was under a lot of pressure.
“Lu Xingguang, call your father and ask him to come here.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Then I will do it.”
“No, don’t!” Lu Xingguang shouted fearfully. “I’ll make the call.”
Lu Xingguang made the call to Yan Susu and, before she could say anything, broke into a loud wail. “Come and save me, quick! There are so many mean people here, and they’re bullying me.”
The teacher sighed in exasperation.
Every single one of those kids had been badly beaten up, yet Lu Xingguang was now playing the victim.
Hearing Lu Xingguang’s cries, Yan Susu was stunned. “Don’t cry; where are you now?”
“The school office.”
Knowing that he was in the office, Yan Susu heaved a sigh of relief and replied, “I’ll be right there. Don’t be afraid.”
“Come quickly. They’re all bullying me. They’re very scary.”
The teacher kept her mouth shut.
Now, who was the scary one here?
Yan Susu charged straight into the school office. Seeing Lu Xingguang unhurt, she calmed down.
“Honey!” At the sight of Yan Susu, Lu Xingguang immediately ran to her and fell into her arms.
Caressing his head, Yan Susu soothed him in a gentle tone. “Everything’s going to be all right.”
“May I know who…?” The teacher was accustomed to seeing either the housekeeper or the secretary turn up to handle matters regarding Lu Xingguang. This was the first time she had met Yan Susu. And, seeing how clingy Lu Xingguang was with her, the teacher was rather curious.
“Hello, I’m Yan. Yes…Mr. Lu’s wife.”
“No, you are my wife! I’m going to marry you when I grow up.” Lu Xingguang shouted defiantly.
“All right, all right; grow up quickly.” Instead of arguing with him, Yan Susu laughed softly.
The child who had been sobbing and wailing into the phone just a few minutes earlier was now full of energy.
Although the teacher was mystified, she did not pursue it further.
“Mrs. Lu, here’s the thing. Lu Xingguang has a habit of bullying the other kids, and he has done things like this on many occasions. Your family usually sends either the housekeeper or the secretary whenever something like this happens. Every time, the matter has been resolved with a donation. In the long run, this will be detrimental to the child’s development.”
The teacher’s words made Yan Susu’s heart ache.
She lowered her head and looked gently into Lu Xingguang’s eyes, asking softly, “Can you tell me what happened?”
Pursing his lips, Lu Xingguang replied, “Didn’t the teacher just tell you? I beat up those kids.”
No matter what, regardless of his explanations, the housekeeper and secretary would always simply smile and give the school some money to settle the matter. So, what was there to explain?
“No, I want to hear it from you.”
Lu Xingguang’s head hung low, and he said nothing.
“Mrs. Lu, this is something that happens frequently. All the other kids have claimed that it was Lu Xingguang who started it…”
Yan Susu raised her head, glanced quietly at her, and smiled slightly. “Ma’am, I’m talking to my son.”
The teacher stopped talking immediately, keeping her displeasure to herself for fear of offending Yan Susu.
“Xingguang, just tell me. I will believe whatever you tell me.”
Lu Xingguang’s head shot up as he looked at Yan Susu incredulously.
