Chapter 47: Sarcasm Is Not Proof of Your Capability
“What are you doing?” Stunned, Su Luoqi had not expected Yan Susu’s sudden action.
Standing upright, Yan Susu looked frostily at her. “Regardless of whether I am qualified for this role, the reality is that it has been assigned to me. I did not sell my body to get here. I’m telling you this out of respect for you.
“If you are not convinced, you can lodge your protest with the manager, or you can compete with me and beat me fair and square. Using innuendos and sarcasm to attack me will not prove that you are capable.
“Or perhaps, to you, women are just an extension of men and therefore cannot accomplish anything on their own? If that is the case, how many men did it take for you to get to your current position?”
“What nonsense are you spouting? I earned this position through plain old hard work, toiling day and night!”
“I don’t believe you!”
“What right have you got to doubt me?”
“Then what right have you got to discredit me?”
They each stood their ground, refusing to budge.
Everyone who had been enjoying the faceoff began to play peacemaker.
“OK, OK. Having someone new in the department is a good thing. Perhaps she is a big talent from somewhere.”
“That’s right. Don’t upset the balance of this place.”
“Talent? Which school did you graduate from? What awards have you won? How much experience have you got?” With a critical eye, Su Luoqi assessed Yan Susu from head to toe.
Ordinary clothes, ordinary makeup, physically frail; not one bit like someone who has been fighting battles in the commercial world. She for one did not believe that this woman was any big talent.
“I have not received any awards.”
Su Luoqi jeered loudly. Her thoughts exactly. How could this frail-looking woman possibly be any good?
“I graduated from Dihuang University’s Department of Advertising & Design on a full four-year scholarship. My final projects were selected for display at the Blue Ribbon Exhibition. I then worked for two years at Ling Enterprise,” Yan Susu continued quietly, making everyone gasp.
Dihuang University was a private university owned by Dihuang, and it had a Department of Advertising & Design that was reputed to be the best around. However, since their fees were astronomical, most people in the general public couldn’t afford it, unless they were on a full scholarship–which was worth up to one hundred thousand dollars.
Dihuang’s Department of Advertising & Design was a hotbed of talented individuals. Only the best of the best would be given a full four-year scholarship and have their graduation works selected for display at the Blue Ribbon Exhibition.
Someone with such stellar credentials should have joined Dihuang’s advertising department as one of their senior staff as soon as she graduated. Why on earth had she ended up at Ling Enterprise, an unknown company?
It turned out that Su Luoqi was also thinking just that. She mocked, “You just keep on blowing your own horn. If you’re as good as you claim to be, why would you join a small company with no reputation?”
Keeping her eyes lowered to hide her pain, Yan Susu replied, “Because my fiancé was there.”
She had given up on her first choice, music, to take up advertising, just so that she could join Ling Enterprise and work alongside her fiancé.
But that incident six years ago had changed everything, and she’d ended up as a money-making machine for Ling Enterprise.
“What? So now that you have latched on to someone wealthier, you have abandoned your fiancé to join Dihuang?” Su Luoqi jeered even louder.
Su Luoqi was just not that interested in whether Yan Susu was telling the truth. All she wanted was to make sure that Yan Susu did not remain in the department; otherwise, she would become Su Luoqi’s biggest threat.
She had gone through a lot to get to where she was now, and she was definitely not going to let anyone steal her thunder!
“You’re so unreasonable.” Yan Susu knew that, despite her many efforts to explain, Su Luoqi would never stop making life hard for her, so she decided to stop trying.
Truth be told, since it had been Lu Zhanxiu who had arranged for her to join them, she had indeed relied on a man. So be it; these people could say anything they liked.
“What did you say?” Su Luoqi glared fiercely at Yan Susu. She had not expected Yan Susu to dare to criticize her.
She was the most senior person in the advertising department, the backbone of the office. Everyone in the department treated her with respect and courtesy.
Losing her patience, Yan Susu responded, “I said that you are being unreasonable, using your advanced age to flaunt your seniority, and expecting the whole world to put you on a pedestal, to give in to you. I’m sorry. I’m not your mother. If you want to, you can listen to what I have to say. Otherwise, just stay away from me.”
