Chapter 48: Do I Have a Communicable Disease?
“So shameless, using men to get where you are and still behaving with such arrogance!”
Exasperated, Yan Susu felt like laughing as she retorted, “So what if I did get this job through a man? I’m young and beautiful, and that is my capital. If you have what it takes, you could also use a man to get you where you want to be. Let’s see if anyone is hardcore enough to take on an aging has-been like you!”
“How dare you insult me. I’m going to kill you!” Having been kicked where it hurt, Su Luoqi went berserk and raised her hand, intending to hit Yan Susu.
Yan Susu laughed quietly. “Feel free to hit me if you’re not afraid of being fired by my backer.”
“You…you’re shameless. Just you wait. Let’s see how long you can go on with your arrogance!”
Since she did not know how much power Yan Susu’s backer wielded, Su Luoqi decided not to take things too far and resorted to making derogatory comments to appease her anger.
Yan Susu sighed quietly, knowing full well that she had made an enemy for life. But she just couldn’t bring herself to shut up and put up with all of it.
All these years, she had endured humiliation from Ling Xiusi; she wouldn’t put up with such nonsense from anyone else.
She had learned from a young age that suffering in silence would not earn her kindness in return. Instead, it would only encourage more and deeper humiliation.
A docile horse is forced to pull the cart, and a timid person gets bullied!
It was lunchtime when she had finally completed a brief orientation to the company.
All her colleagues had gone for lunch in groups of two or three, but no one had bothered with her.
She had expected this outcome. Accustomed to being on her own since she was little, she rose nonchalantly from her chair and prepared to go get some lunch.
The phone rang as she picked up her bag. Not recognizing the caller ID, she hesitated before accepting. “Hello?”
“Come upstairs.”
Lu Zhanxiu?
Puzzled, Yan Susu looked at her phone, which abruptly showed that the call had ended. After a brief pause, she saved Lu Zhanxiu’s number and headed to the CEO’s office.
“Knock, knock—”
“Come in.”
“Sir, you called for me?” asked Yan Susu as she looked respectfully at Lu Zhanxiu, the picture of officialdom.
Busily typing, Lu Zhanxiu paused briefly and then continued working, ignoring her.
Feeling a little awkward, Yan Susu remained standing with her head lowered.
As the seconds turned into minutes, she felt her legs going numb.
Slowly, Yan Susu raised her head, and seeing that Lu Zhanxiu was still engrossed in his work with no intention of acknowledging her presence, she said tentatively, “Sir, if there’s nothing else, I will take my leave now.”
At that, Lu Zhanxiu stopped working and looked up. Giving her an uninterested look, he said, “Mrs. Lu is undoubtedly an ace of Dihuang University’s Department of Advertising & Design.”
Yan Susu wasn’t sure how to respond.
Was Young Mr. Lu displeased again? Why else would he sound so enigmatic?
“Sir, have I said something wrong once again?”
“Once an ace, always an ace; an accurate description as well,” Lu Zhanxiu remarked as he rose from his chair and walked elegantly over to the sofa. Sitting down, he rolled up his shirt sleeves and opened a lunch box.
Yan Susu stood silently.
“Are you just going to stand there like a wooden statue?”
Quickly, Yan Susu walked over and sat uneasily at the far end of the sofa.
Lu Zhanxiu looked at her frostily and asked, “Do I have a communicable disease?”
“No…”
“Does Mrs. Lu?”
“No.”
“Then get over here right now!”
Very quickly, Yan Susu got up, walked over, and sat down beside him.
Lu Zhanxiu grumpily thrust a pair of chopsticks into her hand. “Eat up.”
Stunned, Yan Susu stared at the chopsticks in her hand, momentarily unable to respond.
Had Lu Zhanxiu summoned her upstairs to eat lunch?
Was Lu Zhanxiu aware that she had been iced out by her colleagues?
A warm feeling rushed through her. Yan Susu was on the brink of tears as she mumbled, “Thank you.”
“If Auntie Tang makes a mistake with the lunch box again tomorrow, she can get lost.”
Yan Susu was stunned.
Why did he always have to behave like this? That earlier feeling of appreciation for his kindness quickly dissipated.
Watching Yan Susu’s troubled face, Lu Zhanxiu smiled quietly.
This woman had been most disobedient, always causing him trouble. Finally, it was her turn to feel troubled.
