Chapter 49: Framed, the Old-Fashioned Way
They finished their meal in silence. Wary of upsetting Lu Zhanxiu with any sudden move, Yan Susu remained uneasily seated.
Seeing her in that state, Lu Zhanxiu felt irritated and dismissed her with a wave of his hand. “Leave now.”
Yan Susu said nothing.
Why couldn’t this man just speak his mind? What was the deal with that look of irritation and disdain?
Noting that Lu Zhanxiu was wearing the clothes that she had bought for him, however, the resentment in her heart disappeared and was replaced by an unexplainable joy. Feeling lighter, she returned to her office.
“Hmm, disappearing at the strike of noon. What an insatiable appetite, not forgetting to go to your man any chance you get.”
In response to Su Luoqi’s insinuation, Yan Susu smiled and said, “Yes, of course. He can’t bear to be apart from me, even for a second. What’s it to you, lonely old woman? Are you jealous?”
“You…”
Yan Susu intentionally bumped into Su Luoqi’s shoulder and walked into the office with her head held high, totally disregarding her bully.
To anyone who showed her respect, she would, naturally, return the courtesy.
As for those who deliberately set out to find fault with her, she would not suffer in silence, either.
The others, who had originally gathered around to watch another entertaining scene play out, returned to their desks instead, looking slightly uncomfortable at Yan Susu’s unyielding stance.
That woman had the backing of a powerful higher-up. As small fry, they opted not to get caught up in the argument out of self-preservation.
“Oh, where is my Omega watch? I was just wearing it earlier. It’s worth more than a hundred thousand dollars!” The silence, which had lasted just a few minutes, was interrupted by Su Luoqi’s cries.
“That was a birthday present from my husband, and it cost him six months’ salary. I love that watch and have always worn it; I can’t stand to take it off! What do I now?”
“Don’t panic. When was the last time you saw the watch?”
“Yes, and where were you earlier? Who did you see? Try and recall the specifics.”
Everyone was milling around her, trying to help. Everyone but Yan Susu, who remained in her seat as though she had not heard anything.
She knew very well that Su Luoqi’s stuff would not have disappeared without reason and that she was the target of this act.
What a boring old trick. Yan Tingting had used tricks like this on her so many times over the years that Yan Susu had developed immunity to them all.
“I didn’t see anyone on my way back from lunch. After Yan Susu rammed into me earlier so violently, I realized that my watch had gone missing…”
When Su Luoqi stopped talking, everyone turned toward Yan Susu, their eyes speaking volumes.
Yan Susu pretended not to notice anything. She just continued working.
That was the mob mentality for you. Responding would only fan their thirst for entertainment. As onlookers, they welcomed escalating intensity.
“Yan Susu, hand over Su Luoqi’s watch.” A young girl, unable to hold back any longer at the sight of Yan Susu’s arrogant indifference, decided to fight Su Luoqi’s battle for her.
“Don’t do that. It’s possible that she didn’t take it…” Su Luoqi appeared to be trying to be kind, speaking up for Yan Susu.
Her attitude just made everyone more suspicious of Yan Susu.
After all, it was common knowledge that the two had been at loggerheads.
“Who else could it be? Shameless. Not only using men to get what she wants but also stealing other people’s stuff.”
Yan Susu raised her head and glanced mildly at the girl. Then she smiled, a shadow of a smile, and said, “Mind your words. You might end up with a rotten tongue.”
“You shameless woman. Such arrogance even after stealing someone else’s stuff!”
“Little girl, do you know how many years you could get for malicious slander and insult?”
The young girl, who was still at a tender age, was instantly tongue-tied, intimated by Yan Susu’s words.
Silently calling the young girl useless, Su Luoqi turned to Yan Susu and, with a completely transformed face, pleaded, “Yan Susu, I realize that my attitude this morning was a bit harsh. But that watch is very important to me, so could you please just return it to me? I could even–I could even pay you for it.”
Her pathetic plea, looking every inch the sad victim, made everyone despise Yan Susu even more. One after the other, they criticized her for taking things too far.
