Chapter 57: I Thought You Didn’t Want Me Anymore
“Yes, I’m scolding you. Don’t tell me that the men of the Lu family are blameless and can’t even be told off when they have done wrong?” With her chin stuck out and her fists clenched, Yan Susu tried hard not to tremble as she looked directly at Lu Zhanxiu.
“Mrs. Lu is truly the Holy Mother, putting your life on the line for someone totally unrelated.”
Yan Susu’s heart turned cold.
Totally unrelated?
Of course, she was merely a tool that Lu Zhanxiu was using to fend off any trouble. What they had was an arrangement for mutual benefit, and she was not in fact a member of the Lu family. Therefore, she had no right whatsoever to interfere in their affairs.
She had been living so blissfully these past few days that she had forgotten her place.
Lowering her head, she apologized quietly. “I’m sorry. I’ve been meddling.”
Lu Zhanxiu frowned deeply when he looked at the petite head hanging low. His heart filled with unhappiness, he walked away without a word.
“Madam…” Auntie Tang called out in a low voice. She had not expected Yan Susu to defend the Young Master to this extent. She felt renewed respect for her.
“It’s OK.” Yan Susu looked up and smiled weakly. “It was my fault for not knowing my place. I broke the rules, but I’ll be more careful in the future.”
“Madam, that wasn’t what Sir meant…”
Yan Susu simply smiled and turned to go upstairs.
The huge villa had suddenly become abnormally quiet.
Lying down in her room, Yan Susu was still worried about Lu Xingguang.
Despite knowing that she was meddling, she could not resist getting out of bed and walking over to Lu Xingguang’s room. Knocking gently on the door, she murmured, “Xingguang…”
The door opened suddenly and Lu Xingguang, tears streaming down his face, hugged Yan Susu. “I thought that you didn’t want me anymore, either…”
Her heart aching, Yan Susu stooped and wrapped her arms around him tightly. “I am not abandoning you. Please don’t cry.”
He sobbed, “Honey, please don’t abandon me. I won’t behave badly again. I’ll be good. I’ll study hard and grow up quickly. Look, I’ve finished my homework.”
Yan Susu’s heart was wrenched.
She had assumed that Lu Xingguang had shut himself in his room as a sign of protest. She had not expected him to have been doing his homework.
What kind of life had such a young child been living that he had learned to hide his feelings in this way, bearing it all in silence?
“You’re a good boy, Xingguang. Are you hungry?”
“No.” Lu Xingguang began shaking his head, but unfortunately, the untimely growling from his stomach said otherwise.
The noisy growl seemed even louder in the peace and quiet of the room, causing the boy to flush a deep red.
Despite her aching heart, Yan Susu laughed as she touched his head. “Didn’t you ask for pizza? Come on, I’ll make it for you.”
“But I already said that I was on a hunger strike. Anyway, Lu Zhanxiu said not to give me food…”
“Don’t worry about that. I am not a member of this family, so he can’t stop me.”
In a panic, Lu Xingguang tugged at her hand. “That’s not true. Honey is a member of this family. When I grow up, I’m going to marry Honey.”
Looking at his anxious face, full of sincerity, Yan Susu smiled. “Let’s go. I will make you a pizza. My pizzas are so appetizing that they’ll make you drool.”
“I’m drooling now!”
“Little Glutton, I haven’t even started yet.”
“Honey, hurry up. I can’t wait.”
They walked hand in hand, talking and laughing, into the kitchen.
Upstairs, Lu Zhanxiu, leaning against the railing, pursed his lips as he watched them quietly.
“Sir, shall I make you something to eat?” the housekeeper suggested, a little warily.
“No need.” Lu Zhanxiu turned and walked back into his study to resume his work.
Heaving a sigh of relief, the housekeeper went downstairs. She had not yet reached the kitchen when she heard the Young Master’s chatter.
“Wow, it smells really good. Can’t we eat it now? How much longer?”
