Chapter 39: Confidentiality Agreement
Early in the morning, when the first light arrived, the entire food street finally became alive.
When people walked out of the restaurants one by one, they saw nothing but a mess which spanned the entire stretch of the food street.
The insect corpses from last night, as well as the blood and flesh of the snot bugs that were killed, were all gone. It was as if they had never appeared.
The only evidence that could prove that yesterday’s events did happen was the remains of the broken glass wall and the trash bins that had been overturned.
It had been more than twelve hours since the internet connection of the food street had been cut off including those of cell phones, computers, and electronic devices.
At the same time, the two exits of the food street were filled with armed soldiers.
Everyone who was leaving the food street had to pass through a temporary testing station.
After they were tested negative, special workers moved around, requesting for everyone to sign a confidentiality agreement.
One of the most threatening aspects of the confidentiality agreement was that a casual dissemination of information online would result in up to half a year of imprisonment.
Although there were people who protested, they immediately fell silent when they saw a protester who voiced out fall to the ground after getting hit by the gunstock of a soldier who then took him away.
The atmosphere in the food street was so tense that it was a little terrifying.
Fortunately, this special soldier didn’t question everyone individually. He just gave them a simple confidentiality agreement and reformatted everyone’s phone and electronic devices before letting them go.
Holding the confidentiality agreement in his hand and looking at the crowd that had been released, Ji Yu felt even more puzzled.
“They are releasing everyone this easily?”
Ji Yu started to doubt his judgment last night.
If the phenomenon at the food street last night was a large-scale explosion, then it was evidently meaningless for the officials to hide it.
However, judging from the officials’ attitude towards the food street, Ji Yu could come to a conclusion.
That this phenomenon that happened at the food street last night was rare, and that it had happened before.
The officials had already made preparations. That was why they had such a smooth and quick process of letting everyone sign a confidentiality agreement and releasing them.
Ten minutes later, when Ji Yu was a few hundred meters away from the food street blockade, his cell phone finally received a signal.
“A poison gas leak?”
Ma Hongyu looked at the news on his phone and his face instantly revealed a look of dissatisfaction.
“They even made it sound like that really happened.”
“However, Brother Ji, for them to let us go so easily, are they not afraid of us joining hands to cause trouble?”
“Joining hands to cause trouble?” Ji Yu was amused by Ma Hongyu’s naivety.
“What trouble would you like to cause? Letting people know that the authorities are hiding the truth from them and that they are ignoring people’s rights and safety?”
“Yeah, is there anything wrong with that?”
“There’s nothing wrong with that. I feel like you’re not too far from entering the jail already so it’s better for me to draw the line with you earlier.”
As he joked, Ji Yu quickened his pace, while Ma Hongyu was stunned for a moment before catching up.
Zhou Xin and Wang Qiaoqian had already taken a taxi and left. They did not ask Ma Hongyu to drive them. After all, they were afraid of the bad news spreading in school.
Therefore, after Zhou Xin and Wang Qiaoqian left, Ji Yu took Ma Hongyu’s car and left the food street.
Back in his apartment in his district, Ji Yu was filled with thoughts.
However, the first thing he wanted to do was to gain a better understanding of the situation.
After all, without confirming the truth behind yesterday’s event, he couldn’t conclude if the Purple Moon’s situation had really worsened.
Line’s Federation had too much control over public discussions and news. The only place where he could gather information from was West York.
Besides, the appearance of the Purple Moon usually lasted for a long time. Although the Purple Moon phenomenon ceased in Line’s Federation because of daybreak, night had just fallen in Barna’s Federation which was 11 hours slower than Line’s Federation.
Therefore, at this moment, Ji Yu was anxious to enter the game and descend into the oak tree manifestation in order to observe if there would be any major changes in the rainforest.
He laid on the bed and closed his eyes. As his consciousness faded, Ji Yu woke up again in the oak tree.
Night had just fallen at the Barna Rainforest.
Ji Yu’s gaze swept across the horizon and as expected, he saw the bright purple moon above him.
He swept his gaze through the entire rainforest. It was completely silent at this time and the tribespeople had already hidden themselves under the shadow of the oak tree.
The mutated birds that were favored by the oak tree had also hid themselves in various parts of the dense rainforest.
The raindrops on the canopy of the rainforest were clearly visible. The heavy rain had just stopped.
However, the moment the heavy rain and clouds dispersed, it gave the Purple Moon a chance to shine.
From the crown of the tree, Ji Yu could naturally feel the Purple Moon’s corrosion on the oak tree flowers. However, it was not that much different from what Adam had felt half a month ago.
In terms of intensity, there was only a slight increase.
However, there was a difference between the Purple Moon this time and the one Adam encountered.
The difference lay in the fact that the Purple Moon had appeared at the start of nightfall. If it continued until dawn, it would be more than ten hours.
If it was Adam himself, he would definitely not be able to withstand this confrontation for such a long period of time.
After all, even if Adam entered a meditative state, the continuous consumption of vitality was not something his weakened version of self-meditation could sustain.
If he could not make ends meet, he might even use his vitality to prevent the Purple Moon’s corrosion. Things that hindered the growth of the oak tree was not what Ji Yu wanted to see happening.
“It seems that the Purple Moon’s pollution isn’t as serious as I thought. The incident at the food street can only be considered as a unique phenomenon. No wonder the government handled it that way.”
“In that case, there must be many incidents similar to what happened at the food street.”
Ji Yu was relieved when he thought about that.
Feeling rest assured, Ji Yu put all his attention on the confrontation between the oak tree and the Purple Moon.
Therefore, Ji Yu mobilized the power of the oak tree slightly and immediately entered a semi-meditative state.
Ji Yu was not expecting the night’s meditation to bring much growth to the oak tree. However, at the very least, he could not allow the original vitality of the oak tree to be depleted, nor could he allow the Purple Moon to contaminate the oak tree itself.
After all, it was impossible for anything good to happen after being contaminated by the Purple Moon.
He thought about the snot bugs and the terrifying strange birds that appeared under the Purple Moon. If the mutation caused by the Purple Moon’s radiation was so terrifying, even if they retained their minds, no one would be able to accept it, right?
Habitually, Ji Yu’s mind split into two, letting half of his mind enter a state of meditation.
As for the other half of his mind, he would use it to pay attention to the changes in the outside world and the Purple Moon’s changes from time to time.
