Chapter 53: Thrice the Luck
“Bet?”
Lin Yun looked at the young man before him in confusion.
How was he going to bet?
“They like to call me Gambler because I have entrusted my destiny to this dice.” The young man showed the dice in his hand and said with a smile, “A number from one to six has a probability of one in six on each side, yet it can determine many things.”
Gambler tossed the dice up high and casually picked up a tea bowl before clasping it back onto a table in front of him. He looked at Lin Yun teasingly and asked, “Destiny is just like this dice. The answer you’re about to guess now is actually already predetermined. Just guess whether the number on this dice is big or small.”
“There’s no need to guess. I saw it when it landed. It’s clearly a 6.” One-eyed stared at Lin Yun with his one eye and chuckled.
“You saw it with your electronic eye? Are you that kind? I don’t believe it’s big. It’s definitely small.” Drunkard had a face full of confidence and was about to reach out and uncover the tea bowl.
One-eyed panicked and blocked him while flicking the tea bowl with his finger. Suddenly, the dice in the tea bowl tumbled once again. He laughed. “Do you still think this one’s small?”
“Hmph!”
Drunkard’s expression turned ugly and he stopped paying attention to One-eyed.
“Alright, alright. You guys stop messing around. Hurry up and ask the little friend for his answer,” Purple Rose said, casting her gaze at Lin Yun, who looked pensive.
Lin Yun looked at the upside-down tea bowl and asked softly, “Can I shake it a little?”
Gambler laughed. “Whatever, but don’t think about cheating. If you use your Spirit to detect it, Boss will notice it right away. After all, your Spiritual Strength is only around Level 4. Why don’t you say whether it’s big or small before shaking this tea bowl?”
Lin Yun softly replied, “I say it’s a big one.”
After he said that, he placed his hand on the tea bowl and gently closed his eyes.
Everyone’s attention moved to Lin Yun’s hand, waiting for his destiny to shake.
One minute…
Two minutes…
Five minutes…
“Little friend, shake it!” Purple Rose shouted anxiously.
“Don’t be anxious. I’m mulling over it,” Lin Yun nonchalantly explained, but he was very depressed. He had failed to trigger the Stacking Art twice.
As time went on, One-eyed’s expression became increasingly ugly. It could be seen that he was forcing himself to endure without making a sound. However, Lin Yun was still unperturbed and unhurried.
Finally, another ten minutes passed.
Right at this moment, Lin Yun moved his hand, slightly moving the tea bowl before uncovering it.
The dice in the tea bowl was a 6!
“Hahaha!” Seeing One-Eyed turn his face to the side, Drunkard couldn’t help but laugh.
Seeing this 6, Lin Yun was overjoyed. With thrice the luck, his luck was more than five times that of a normal person. It was indeed easy to get a 50% chance of getting it right. An idea then arose in his mind. If he accidentally got lost, could he double his luck and ask for directions?
“Alright. In that case, you will join our squad.” The captain, who had a calm face, announced the decision in a loud voice.
“First, you will give yourself a nickname and report on what you are good at.”
Lin Yun looked at everyone’s searching gazes and said after contemplation, “My nickname is Mu Mu. I specialize in scouting and close combat.”
“You’re scouting given your Spiritual Strength of Level 4?” With a disdainful look, One-eyed continued, “My name is One-eyed, and I’m the squad’s scout and sniper.”
“My name is Drunkard, and I’m the squad’s driver and repairman.” Drunkard went on to introduce himself, pointing to One-eyed’s electronic eye. “This thing broke once, and I fixed it.”
“Get lost! After you fixed it, the mosaic appears out of nowhere!” One-eyed yelled in discontent, causing everyone to roar in laughter.
“My name is Purple Rose. I’m the front line of the squad, specializing in heavy guns and martial arts.” Purple Rose struck a shooting stance with her right hand before she blew the tip of her index finger.
“I’m Gambler, a Level 6 Spiritualist. I’m also an analyst and long-range attacker for the squad.” Gambler picked up the dice and played with it again.
The captain said slowly, “You can call me boss or captain. I’m the squad captain, and I specialize in close combat and healing.”
“Healing?” Lin Yun was shocked. It was no wonder he was able to become the captain. In times of war like this, mastering healing was akin to having another life.
“Mu Mu, we aren’t aware of your true strength, so you’ll be in charge of logistics and weapon maintenance first. Do you have any objections?” The captain asked in a low voice as he looked calmly at Lin Yun.
“No objections,” Lin Yun replied. Having just joined this squad, he couldn’t ask for a higher position.
“I can finally get out of the misery of cooking and polishing bullets all day!” Drunkard yelled out.
“That’s what you really want, isn’t it, slacker! Now that I can finally speak the truth—your cooking is awful.”
“I propose we have a party tonight to celebrate Mu Mu’s addition and Drunkard getting out of his predicament.”
“There’s no need to celebrate Drunkard getting out of his predicament.”
…
The warm atmosphere of the squad quickly influenced Lin Yun, and a kind of comradeship made him passionate inside. After being filled with a few cups of poor-quality baijiu[1] by Drunkard, he began to brag to everyone. Then, he drank together with One-eyed. In the end, he didn’t even know who had carried him to his bed before he fell into a deep sleep.
Under the sand dunes, it was impossible to tell day from night. When Lin Yun woke up, he only felt that his mouth was dry. He picked up a broken teacup at the side and took a sip of the liquid inside, but found that it was the poor-quality baijiu.
“That’s right, I need to activate the contribution system.”
Therefore, Lin Yun accessed Skynet and inquired about related information to the activation of the contribution system.
The process of activating the contribution system was very simple. Lin Yun quickly activated it and entered the system interface.
After entering the interface, Lin Yun discovered that he already had 43 Contribution Points, which seemed to have been obtained by killing those four demon soldiers.
“Am I not able to obtain Contribution Points for what I did at the Blue Sea Planet? This may be a mutual agreement between the humans and the demons. If the demons could get Contribution Points for killing humans within their territories, humans and demons would have likely been in a mess a long time ago.”
Then, Lin Yun looked over the contribution exchange system, which he was most looking forward to.
The Contribution Exchange was divided into two categories: the Human Alliance Exchange and the Skynet System Exchange. In the Human Alliance Exchange, there was everything from something as small as a car to a Planet Master. In the Skynet System Exchange, increasing strength was based on Contribution Points.
Suddenly, a female electronic voice sounded, and Lin Yun knew that something good was happening again.
“Skynet exchange page optimization in progress. Please wait…
Optimization complete. New exchange program description as follows:
One, Contribution Points and EXP can be exchanged on a one-to-one basis.
Second, Contribution Points can be exchanged for items, equipment, and skills.
Third, Contribution Points can evolve skills and upgrade them.”
Lin Yun was delighted and quickly checked the Stacking Art.
“Stacking Art. 10,000 EXP is required for evolution, and 100 EXP is required for an upgrade.”
Lin Yun sighed. 10,000 EXP meant 10,000 Contribution Points. He had to kill more than 1,000 demon soldiers for that. As for the 100 EXP required for the upgrade, he only had 63 EXP on top of the Contribution Points.
Thus, he focused on the items and equipment that appeared in the Skynet System Exchange. However, there were only two items on the page right now.
“Small Red Potion. Price: 10. Restores 50 HP.
Small Blue Potion. Price: 10. Restores 50 Spiritual Points.”
After a bit of thought, Lin Yun exchanged 6 bottles of Small Red Potion. As for the Small Blue Potion, he didn’t exchange one bottle at all. After all, his Spiritual Strength was too low for it to be of much use after exchanging it.
“Mu Mu, are you awake?”
Lin Yun was immersed in the Human Alliance Exchange page, calculating the number of zeros of the Contribution Points for a baron title, when he suddenly heard Drunkard’s voice. He exited Skynet and walked out of the small room.
“Little friend, you still have to work on your alcohol tolerance.” One-eyed looked at Lin Yun disdainfully and suddenly burped, causing a strong alcoholic smell to come out.
“I wonder who threw up last night.” Drunkard’s hand was resting on Purple Rose’s shoulder as if nothing had happened, but his eyes were looking at One-eyed.
Just then, the captain walked in and everyone quickly stopped making noise.
“You’re all up. Good. Today, we have a very easy mission.”
The captain spread out a paper map and pointed to one of the marked locations.
“According to Skynet intelligence, a demon fleet delivering supplies will pass by here at noon, which is three hours from now. Based on Skynet’s mission, this fleet only has two sand dune tanks and dozens of ordinary demon soldiers.”
Everyone moved their heads closer and looked at the marking on the map.
“This is not under Skynet’s range, so I’m afraid we won’t be able to get vision help. With just a few of us, I’m afraid it’s a bit difficult.” Gambler calmly analyzed.
“It doesn’t matter. This Skynet mission will be taken up by a total of three squads. We just need to ambush here and attack at the same time as the other two squads.”
The captain’s finger moved to a sand dune marked on the map. He gently clenched his fist with a calm face. “This time, we must earn at least 500 Contribution Points.”
The captain’s gaze scanned everyone and finally landed on Lin Yun. He slowly said, “I don’t want any casualties, understand?”
“Understood!”
