Chapter 10: Old Man Part 1
Xu Yun Yao knew that the wretched old woman was a persistent offender.
It could be seen that this pair of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in this house were all soft steamed stuffed buns that could be manipulated by others. With Wang-shi’s temperament, how could she produce that sinister old man? It’s bizarre!
At the moment, Qian-shi was looking at Yong’gēr skillfully flipping around the room to ferret. Then she sneered at Wang-shi, “I didn’t dare imagine that you could treat Bai Nian as your own flesh and blood. However, I didn’t think your heart was so biased that you took out all your body and soul to buy your own son’s future and turned a blind eye to the children left behind by the first wife.”
“This is also good. Now that Bai Nian has the chance to make progress, it would be nice for you—mother and son—not to say anything about it. On the contrary, you still obstruct everything.”
Wang-shi wiped her tears and said, “What older sister says, I really am not capable. Since entering Tang’s house, Bai Nian and Zhang Nian are my sons. I dare not say that I treat them with great care, but I also dare not neglect them.
“If I really take the money from this family to help Song Nian in private, I will not die a natural death but from five thunderstorms. After my death, I will also fall into hell and rejected by the ancestors of the Tang family!
“As for what older sister said about Bai Nian’s promotion to an official, I really don’t know anything. He is also my son, and as a mother, how can I not be happy to see my son have a good future?
“Older sister, be at ease. To help Bai Nian have a good future, even if I have to lose a family fortune, I will absolutely support him!”
Qian-shi was satisfied only when she got the right answer.
When Tang Song Nian returned at night, Ruan-shi told him about Qian-shi’s visit in the daytime.
Hearing that old woman came to the door again, Tang Song Nian frowned and looked very unhappy. Only when he heard about his daughter’s performance of “protecting food” did his mouth turn slightly upward, and he could not help but exclaim, “Little Treasure did an excellent job there.”
Ruan-shi glared at him. “You’re still praising her since you didn’t see her aunt’s face just now. This time, you may have offended others.”
Tang Song Nian disagreed with her, though, and pinched the face of Xu Yun Yao, who was holding curio shelves while trembling to stand up. He successfully drew the little girl’s attention to come over. Before she could protest discontentedly, he smiled and said, “If you like the jewelry, your father will find more for you some other day.”
Xu Yun Yao gave him a disdainful look.
What good things has this palace not seen? Is there anything that needs an old man to find?!
“After aunt left, mother let Xia mama open the door of the storeroom and cleared it for nearly half an hour. At the moment, she had just had dinner.” Ruan-shi added.
Tang Song Nian’s stretched-out hand to hold his daughter slightly paused, and he mockingly hooked the corner of his mouth. He already knew the purpose of Qian-shi’s visit today, and his mother’s reaction after seeing her was already clear to him.
Although everything was in his expectations, when things really happened, there was always lingering anger in his heart.
Xu Yun Yao didn’t miss the expression on his face. Her eyes rolled a few times as she looked at him with great interest.
It seemed that deep down, there was still some unhappiness hidden between this mother and son.
Tang Song Nian saw his daughter’s flickering big eyes, white, tender, round face with a smile like peach blossoms, and a quivering pair of dimples. He felt that the anger in his heart immediately dissipate as he picked up the little girl and coaxed her: “Little Treasure, call father.”
Xu Yun Yao snubbed at him.
Call him father? The old man must be dreaming!
Ruan-shi shook her head and said, “This little girl can already utter some simple words, but she just won’t open her mouth to speak.”
Xu Yun Yao pretended not to hear.
Ruan-shi, Cui Wen, and Bi Wen always liked to teach her to pronounce father and mother. But she felt uncomfortable and refused to do it. Instead, she was able to shout out simple names such as “table, stool, and flower” word by word soon.
“I remember Zhou’gēr’s first word was ‘mother’ at that time.” Tang Song Nian thoughtfully glanced at his son at the couch, who was playing with his cloth tiger.
