Chapter 51: Approachable and Easy-going
The Virtual Dream Gear had a regulation that one could only enter the dream world during the night.
In other words, he still had the entire morning.
Chen Xu was thrilled and no longer sleepy, so he got up from the bed. After washing up, he cooked some noodles and ate them lifelessly.
He did not have the motivation to do anything at the moment, and he felt a little suffocated at home, so he grabbed his briefcase and left the house.
It was around 5:40 AM. The skies were still dark.
Chen Xu strolled around the empty streets as the chilling wind hit his face, but he did not feel cold at all.
Occasionally, he would meet pedestrians, who were either rushing to work or heading home to rest.
He wandered around aimlessly, and after a short while, he reached an unfamiliar street. Frankly, he had been living in this area for more than a year, but he had not had the chance to explore.
Unconsciously, he reached a small square nearby. Many people were doing their morning exercises; most of them were elderly with a small number of young people.
He stayed at the square, trying to kill time before it was finally time for him to leave. Then, he started to walk towards the bus stop.
On his way to the company, he was diligently scrutinizing everyone, hoping to find the next suitable candidate. Despite coming across a few good-looking ones, he was not satisfied as he always felt that there was something amiss.
He reached the company earlier than usual. While he was waiting for the lift, he met Lu Xiyun coincidentally. A thought flashed across his mind: “Why not bring her along into my second dream world?”
He was thrilled at the idea. Basing just on looks, Luo Xiyun was the best-looking one among all the females he had met before. Maybe it was because he had spent too much time with her, he would unconsciously compare every girl he met against her when he was selecting his second candidate.
Nonetheless, he still brushed off the thought after more consideration.
He was aware of Luo Xiyun’s temper, and he certainly did not want to experience that all over again. That would be looking for trouble unless she was able to retain the memories from their first dream.
However, that was impossible.
…
Chen Xu left the company after his meeting ended.
The department’s advertising project was outsourced to an advertising agency. He was just an errand runner with no authority to make any decisions. He would have to submit every photo to the higher-ups for selection.
Exiting the company’s lobby, he headed towards the subway station. Just when he walked past an intersection, a Mercedes-Benz stopped abruptly in front of him, and the rear window was lowered. It was Liu Kun.
“Vice-chairman Mr. Liu?” Chen Xu was flabbergasted. “Why did you stop me?”
“Chen Xu, where are you heading towards?” Liu Kun smiled warmly.
Chen Xu replied, “I’m going to the store on XX road.”
“Let me take you there since it is on my way. Get in!”
“Thank you, vice-chairman, Mr. Liu.”
After expressing his gratitude, Chen Xu got in the car from the opposite side, but he was very cautious.
“Start the car,” Liu Kun told his chauffeur. After the car started, he turned to Chen Xu and asked, “Are you coping well in the new department?”
“Everything’s fine except that we have to work overtime quite frequently, and I couldn’t get used to it initially.”
“Yes, there is a lot of stuff to do as this department is newly set up. Thank you for your hard work.”
“It’s all worth it since the company pays us overtime fees.”
“Haha…” Liu Kun burst out laughing, “You are really honest.”
They chatted during the entire journey. Liu Kun was unexpectedly approachable. He asked about Chen Xu’s daily life without making him feel uncomfortable.
“I will get out here,” Chen Xu said as they approached an intersection.
After the car had stopped, he thanked vice-chairman Mr. Liu once again before exiting the car. He stood on the pavement as he watched the car disappear from his view. He was confused.
He did not understand why a busy man like Liu Kun would take notice of a nobody like him? So much so that he would stop to give him a ride to his destination.
Was he trying to show his subordinates that he was approachable?
Or did he see something in Chen Xu and was preparing him for a place of importance?
Liu Kun had just been chit-chatting with him during the car ride, and there was nothing really important that he revealed, so Chen Xu could only make wild guesses.
He couldn’t have been just bored, right?
After a while, Chen Xu still could not come into a conclusion, so he just threw the thoughts out of his mind and walked toward the store.
…
“Mr. Liu, Mr. Liu…”
After Chen Xu got out, Liu Kun was deep in thoughts. He did not even hear the chauffeur calling for him.
“Mr. Liu!” the chauffer called louder.
“Yes?” Liu Kun was snapped out of his thoughts.
“We’ve arrived.” The chauffeur asked cautiously, “Is there a problem?”
“Nothing, let’s go.”
Liu Kun returned to normal and exited the car. He was meeting a very important person, so he could not afford to be distracted.
They were in the basement parking lot. Liu Kun led the chauffeur to an elevator and up to the highest level.
Once the elevator doors opened, they were greeted by the front desk.
Liu Kun adjusted his tie before exiting the elevator, and he said to the staff at the front desk, “I am Liu Kun, I’ve got an appointment with Chairman Yang.”
The staff at the front desk smiled and said, “Chairman Yang has informed us. This way please.”
Liu Kun signaled to his chauffeur, asking him to wait outside. He followed the staff up a spiral staircase until they reached a door.
He stopped in his steps for a brief moment and took a small unnoticeable breath before entering the room.
There was an office inside. The wooden racks on the wall facing the door were filled with potted plants.
On the right side was a glass wall, providing a panoramic view of the sky and the eight-lane highway beneath the building, which stretched into the distance. There was no building taller than this one in the vicinity.
Liu Kun took a glance at the view outside. Despite the fact that this was not the first time he had come to this office, he was still astonished by the breathtaking view.
“Will I ever be able to own such an office one day?” he wondered silently.
“Chairman Yang, Chairman Liu is here.”
A lady’s voice pulled him back into reality. Looking over, he saw the owner of the office sitting in front of his desk while holding a kettle in his hands and pouring hot water into a purple clay teapot.
“Take a seat.”
She looked like she was 27 or 28 years old with delicate makeup and her hair tied up into a bun. She was wearing a plain yellow blouse and was in total concentration as she stared intently at her tea-tray.
When Liu Kun saw the lady, his eyes lit up. But soon after, he lowered his eyes and sat on the chair next to the desk with a very respectful attitude.
The lady poured a cup of tea and used the wooden tweezers to put the cup of tea in front of him.
Liu Kun lowered his head and received the cup with both of his hands.
“I understand your reason for this visit.” The lady put down the tweezers and took a cloth to clean the water droplets on the table. “However, you should understand that I’m just an investor. I will not interfere with the management of the business.”
Liu Kun said carefully, “If it wasn’t for the company, I would never dare to bother you. Yu Xi has worked so hard for this project. She’s exhausted. Please help her…”
The lady stared a plant next to her for a moment or two before replying, “There won’t be a next time.”
“Thank you.”
Liu Kun was relieved. He took a sip of the tea and left.
The moment he stepped out of the door, a wave of disappointment washed over him. From the start until the end, the lady had not even looked at him.
He wanted to turn back to take another look, but his neck was locked in position.
Bam.
The office door was shut. He let out a small sigh as he walked out.
