I’m the only one!
The girl who spoke was wearing a mask. Her glare alone shook people to the core.
Passers-by who were just about to criticize Quan Jin for taking someone’s life as a joke, all proceeded to shut up in fear.
One of the younger females sneered at her comment. She directed her livestream camera toward the rooftop and smirked. She was curious to find out, should the female student be triggered and really jump to her death, whether Quan Jin could remain so conceited. And she could also gain some followers at the same time.
The girl standing on the rooftop stretched her arms open and leaned forward, a tinge of vengeance and relief lingering at the corners of her lips. All she had to do was to lose her balance and she would fall right down.
The public surrounding the scene had their hearts in their throats as they held their breaths.
At such a crucial moment, an almost magical voice came from behind the girl, “So you trust me? Just hold on for another minute, and I will return you with a life of freedom.”
A life of freedom?
She never would have to be forced to study all day long, never would have to accept the things she hated, never would have to be afraid to fall short of their expectations?
In front of the crowd, the girl held on to this last hope, turning slowly to face Quan Jin and laughed bitterly.
“He doesn’t even care about my feelings and freedom. I don’t get to choose what I like. And we’re talking about freedom? After coming first in class, I had to come in first in school and then first in the province… How important are a single sheet of paper and a few numbers to them? More important than I could ever be!”
Everyone watched in fear as the girl wobbled on the edge of the building–a misstep and she would fall off.
Quan Jin remained silent.
Listening to the girl venting, a few parents in the crowd could not hold back their displeasure, “What else could you do besides studying? Your parents are doing this in your best interest! In the future, you will be able to attend a great university and meet a great husband, how could you not be appreciative of their efforts?”
“We didn’t even have money to go to school when we wanted to, back in the day!”
The girl felt tired and helpless. And yet these people had decided to make it worse!
The little hope that she had felt earlier from Quan Jin’s words vanished.
“Right! It was all in my best interest, no matter what they had forced me into, it was all in my best interest!”
They destroyed her dreams to become an artist and a pianist for her own good, and berating her while calling her useless when she couldn’t meet their expectations was also for her own good? They had never questioned the things they had asked of her, they just knew it was what they wanted from her.
Why keep her alive then?
Quan Jin spoke, “Jumping off from here just proves that you are weak, hopeless, and useless! You don’t even have the courage to pursue freedom. Believe me, just ten seconds! Whatever you want, whatever you wish for, I will give it all to you!”
Everyone held their breath.
“Three seconds!”
Quan Jin pulled her mask down, revealing the eyes that the girl couldn’t help but put her trust into, stepping back from the edge of the building.
“And one last second–alright, now look up and face the door of the stairwell.”
She was indeed a persuasive and magical individual, pulling the helpless girl back from death and slowly toward the stairwell of the rooftop.
Her pupils, once filled with emptiness and despair, shrunk in disbelief and dilated again…
